Novlr: 10 reasons why it’s a beautiful place to write

Novlr is a platform that I’ve been using since 2016.

In the absence of a writer’s hut or a seaside lodge, I’d always longed for a special place to sit and write. And I found it in Novlr.

Back in the day, I’d get all my writing done on a plain Word document. I’d find it manageable, as long as I remembered where I had saved my latest work. And as long as I backed it up so that I’d never lose it. It also felt very…what’s the word?

Clinical.

But I longed for a place that felt special. A place to shut the world out and just write.

I found that in Novlr.

In fact, I loved it so much that I paid for a one-off lifetime subscription and I’ve not once regretted it.

I approach story-writing like a project, and as such, I use a project management tool to get my structure down. You can read about that here.

Once my story has been laid down, it’s then the bit that I look forward to the most – logging into Novlr and creating my own worlds, characters and adventures.

This blog post runs through the main features of Novlr and how it can benefit you.

At the end of the post, there’s a link to get yourself 15% discount off a yearly subscription to make life even sweeter.

Novlr is your special place to write

The first thing that strikes you about Novlr is its beauty. It’s a crisp, sharp interface that’s simple to navigate and full of useful tools.

Novlr’s dashboard is clean, beautiful and very useful

You’ll also quickly realise that you’ll have no need to go anywhere else to do your work because you can store all your short stories, novels or whatever you’re working on here. There is even an online course that you can take to help you get from Couch to 80k.

I’ve used Scrivener in the past and found it all a bit too cold and business-like. Novlr was a revelation to when I first started using it.

So how can you benefit? What can it do for you?

Let’s dig into some key features.

Novlr constantly saves your work

We’ve all been there.

You’ve gone to open the document you’ve been working on – your pride and joy. You’ve poured your heart and soul into this one but when you click Open, an error message pops up. You go hot and cold at the same time. There’s that pit-of-your-stomach feeling. Blood drains out of you.

In a panic, you try all your other folders.

Nothing.

Fear not because Novlr constantly saves your work – even when you’re offline. It does this cleverly by saving your work to the browser that you’re using so that if you do lose Wifi, it’ll automatically update your work when it reconnects.

Phew!

Focus mode lets you switch off from the world

One of the main reasons I kept working with Novlr was its Focus Mode. I’m very easily distracted by everything else happening on my screen so the fact that I can disappear into my own little bubble really helps my concentration levels.

Novlr’s Night Mode is my absolute favourite place to go when I’m working late into the night. The sidebars disappear and all that’s left is just you and your words. It really helps with productivity. You feel very much as if you’re in your story as you’re creating it.

My day job is magazine publishing and I often use Novlr as my preferred way of penning my features without distraction before transferring them to Adobe InDesign.

Access your work from any device

Because Novlr is cloud-based, you can sign in from any device and have instant access to your work. I’ve logged in on my tablet on the way to meetings a few times and added to my daily word count.

Novlr helps with on-screen assistance

You can toggle several helpful tools that will assist you in your work. These include:

  • Spell check
  • Grammar enhancements
  • Writing style suggestions
  • Detailed error explanations
  • Book cover Designers & Artists
  • Share read-only with Editors/friends

Novlr can help you with your goals

Self-discipline can be a challenge for writers. Motivation can come and go and if you’ve not got anyone on your back waiting for your work, your word count can suffer and your work can end up laying dormant for years.

You can set daily and monthly goals and Novlr will keep track of your activity to keep tabs on how you’re doing.

Self-publish straight from Novlr

Not too long ago, publishing an ebook was a long-winded and complicated affair. If you didn’t have the know-how or patience, you’d often end up throwing your computer out of the window.

One of the more powerful features in Novlr is ability to automatically create an ePub file of your work, ready for publication as an ebook.

It can even add a cover for you!

You’ve got no excuses now!

Analytics

Novlr keeps track of all your stats and lets you know how many words you’ve been banging out over a period of time. At the time of writing this post, Novlr proudly tells me that I’ve been in Novlr for 1583 days. It even tells you what time of day you prefer to write and your average daily word count.

You can sync to Dropbox or Google Drive

If like me, you scribble down ideas and photos for your stories and save them on your Dropbox or GDrive, Novlr allows you to sync with both of these.

It’s not expensive

For the price of a few takeout coffees a month, you can have this wonderful place to work and never lose your words by accidentally saving over it.

Novlr offer monthly and yearly plans and you can also give it a test drive for two weeks without having to hand over any payment details.

If you fancy giving it a go, you can get started here.

And if you do end up taking it up for a year, use this discount code to get yourself a 15% discount, courtesy of yours truly:
